One of a kind small Colonial period pouch. Bolivia, 18th century. Silver wrapped silk thread embroidery on a silk velvet ground that shows a Spanish (Europeanized) idealization of an indian with feather headdress standing among floral branches with peacock. In one hand a circle (shield?) with roman numerals and letters within the circle that seem to spell "livertad" (i.e., liberty). The letters all seem clear except for the "e" which doesn't look like an e the way we would write it now. In the second half of the 18th Century there was a revolution fermenting in the Andean region among the indigenous populations. Later those of Spanish descent who were born in the new world would join with the indigenous peoples to gain independence for Bolivia from the Spanish crown.
