Rushnyk. Ukraine, 1st half 20th century. 105"x17" selvedge to selvedge (both selvedges intact). The rushnyk is shown folded in half - the same pattern appears at the top and bottom. The embroidered area measures 41" in length. Cotton cross-stitch hand embroidery on homespun, hand-woven natural linen. Good condition - fabric and embroidery strong, no stains or color runs - embroidery is softly faded. Needs to be ironed - shadows and creases in photos are not stains. Rushnyks are long hand-woven ritual textiles. Elaborately embroidered ones such as this example were used in the home near icons; as part of a wedding ceremony; or simply as a decorative item. Red was always the dominant color. To see more textiles and books from my collection please go to www.susanmeller.com
