Tekke Turkmen Torba, Central Asia, 19th Century, 3’ 6” x 1’ 6”

The six gol torba format is perhaps one of the more common forms seen among extant Tekke weavings. They were probably an important element of the dowry offerings a woman was obliged to produce for her marriage.

Given the plentitude of these weavings, it is easy to “miss” a good one when it appears. Too often, we, in our present state of appreciation of the art form, take things for granted, subconsciously comment to ourselves, “Oh, another one of those.” This is not just another one of those, but rather a stellar example of the type.

The expansive gols are well drawing with ample space given to the gol centers as well as the birds and other iconography present in the drawing. The chemche gols are well drawn too, with the ‘arrows’ at either end (on the horizontal axis) given enough room to separate themselves from the main element.

The decorated elem is a lovely feature too, as is the fact the torba is absolutely complete, with the flat woven back intact with braided hanging cords on either side.

The pile is full and lustrous and the dyes are resplendent and glowing. Few torbas have survived in this type of condition over the years.
