Afshar Rug, se Persia(?), 19th century, 4' 2" x 5' 3”, $1500

An extremely unusual example of Afshar tribal weaving, possibly from se Persia, but it is not certain. The rug is woven with a symmetric knot, and the warps are a combination of dark and ivory wool plied together, an unusual characteristic.

The coarser weave and unusual structural characteristics seem to place this rug in a group of Afshar weavings .

The borders are typical of the Afshar tribal design pool, but the field design is extremely unusual for rugs from this group. Though not uncommon among Baluch weavings, i know of no other Afshar rug with this particular design type, composed of eight pointed stars contained within octagons.

The condition is ok, the rug has some areas of re-piling and some wear as well. There is also a small repair on one edge though the selvedges and original kilim ends ar intact. The colours are all derived from natural dyes
